What to do if you are diagnosed HIV positive?
It’s a constant fear; we all worry about it!
- What if I have AIDS?
- What If I got it last night or last week or last year?
- Will I die?
- What will happen to my family and my children? Will I die?
We all know that AIDS is one of the greatest killers of the century. With no cure on the horizon yet, the millions of infected patients are yearning for something to hold on to as they watch their lives dwindling away! Researchers and medical pharmaceutical companies have realized that the one person or company that will come up with the treatment for AIDS could probably rule the entire world. But till then what will we do? What if you do get diagnosed as a HIV positive patient? Are you going to commit suicide or are you just going to give up? No you don’t have to! Please, please remember that with the newer medication of the antiretroviral therapy, it has now become possible for patients to enjoy a simpler richer lifestyle. Nothing is different! You can enjoy your life just as you would normally! A few things to start with are-
Change your mindset!
Do not assume that you are going to die. There are millions of patients who are on the antiretroviral therapy all over the world. The medications has ensured that patients now can survive 10-15 years longer than when the disease was first discovered. Awareness of the disease has increased and patients are not treated with so much social stigma as previously. The first thing to do when you get a positive test is to get in touch with a good support group for HIV Counseling who can guide you on how to deal with disease and its lifestyle modification.
Choosing a good doctor!
No one decided or volunteer to get AIDS. It can happen due to sheer carelessness or blood transfusions or a host of other reasons. But no one has the right to judge your condition. If you find that your doctor is not as supportive as you would like him to be, then its time to find someone who can. Believe me, the disease is hard itself without having to deal with a disbelieving and critical doctor. You will need support and understanding so find someone who is like that!
Reading up on the disease!
There is so much research going on in the field that it’s really surprising. New articles on treatment modalities, miracle herbs etc, etc are all being tested as probable treatments for the disease. It pays to be updated on this information as it keeps hope alive for a Hiv cure.
Do I need to tell employers and friends?
You only need to tell those people whom you want to tell. And no one can judge your personal life so long as it does not impinge on your professional life. But it would be a good idea to tell your family as you will need their support for living with HIV.

Please and kindly help me know the type of foods I should consume the hieginic conditions I should follow. And the best support I can join to help me join a college and study the same course offered on the disease so I can be a n inspirational example to people living with aids.- I also want to start the fight now and if possible start acenterwhere such persons like me can never lose hope but have hope and get uplifted to lead their normal lives. Hey Erick,
Its quite normal for HIV infected people to lead normal life in initial years. But please please start Antiretroviral drugs as soon as possible. As you have already been tested twice as positive, you should not avoid drugs at all. Take assistance of NGOs locally and yeah, do find a job for yourself.
