Foods not to be taken during pregnancy
During pregnancy, women should take care of their diet and eating habits. A balanced and healthy diet is very essential throughout the pregnancy period. For healthy being, pregnant women should consume about 300 cals more than their normal diet. Moreover, there are certain food products which are useful for the woman’s body but may prove to be baleful for the fetus. Hence, such products should be avoided. Below are listed the foods which should be avoided in pregnancy:
Raw Meat
Rare or raw meat contains lot of salmonella and bacteria which may cross the placenta and harm the development of fetus.hence this should be completely avoided. Raw eggs should be avoided as well.
Fish High in Mercury
A number of varieties of fish are a good source of mercury. This may cause damage to brain part in the growing fetus and may lead to delay in development of the fetus. Sharks, swordfish, tuna, tilefish, king mackerel etc possess high quantity of mercury. Likewise, shellfish like oyster, shrimp etc should be prevented too especially if they are not cooked properly. Steamed sea food and sushi is also not advised at the time of pregnancy.
Deli Meat
Deli meat taken in any type can cause severe pregnancy problems like miscarriages. Therefore, it is always recommended to stay away from deli meats like bologna, turkey, hot dogs etc. Overcooked meat can also be harmful for the fetus.
Soft Cheeses
You should restrain yourself from eating soft cheeses such as Brie, Feta, and blue veined cheeses, Panelo, Quesco Blanco, Camembert and Quesco Fresco. Though, pasteurisation makes them suitable for intake in pregnancy. As they are prone o bacterial infections, they can cause serious problems in this situation. Listeria infection is one severe problem that you may experience due to intake of soft cheese.
Unpasteurised Milk
Consumption of this may cause fetus to contract an infection or a blood poisoning situation. Probability of Salmonella or Listeria infection increases by intake of unpasteurised milk.
Alcohol and Caffeine
These have the capability to cross the placenta and cause harm to the fetus. However, limited amount of caffeine like for example, 1 cup of coffee or 1 coke a day is just OK.
Apart from this, the safe food should be taken with great caution too.
