The Early Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes are

  • Frequent Urination (polyuria): Excessive urination is the most common symptom of diabetes and is present in all types of diabetes patients. If you urinate more than 7-10 times daily then you should get yourself tested for diabetes. Diabetes patients urinate more because body tried to remove excessive sugar from blood through urine.
  • Excessive Thirst (polydipsia): Feeling thirsty frequently is another diabetes symptom that is present in all diabetes patients. This is related to the 1st symptom above because when you urinate frequently, you will feel thirsty frequently.
  • Excessive Hunder (polyphagia): As glucose does not absorb well into the cells of bodydue to insulin resistance or less insulin production, so our body keeps feeling deficient in energy and therefore we feel hungry.
  • Undue Fatigue: Because our body does not get the glucose from blood, it feels energy shortage and that results in fatigue. Diabetic patients are unable to work long hours and often feel head and leg ache.

In addition to these symptoms, the type I diabetes patients also suffer from sudden weight loss. In type I diabetes, the symptoms usually appear suddenly, typically in individuals under 20 years of age.

One has to remain alert to these diabetes symptoms and get an immediate check up done to detect it. If diabetes is left untreated, it can cause some serious complications like heart diseases, feet pain, nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure  and more..

Treatment of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a very serious condition but with detection of diabetes at early stage it is possible for an individual to live a long life. However he must keep in mind that he must not take it easy and make a conscious effort to live a healthy life. Also he should carry out the fasting glucose, HBA1C and Lipid profile tests from time to time and consult a good Diabetes Physician for various treatment options as well as dietary changes and lifestyle changes that you may be required to make. There are several treatments and options available to help diabetics manage diabetes and live better lives and avoid diabetic complications.

Identifing diabetes symptoms on time, starting the treatment and making life style changes is all that matters in how long and well you can live with this disease. If you’re over 35 years of age, obese, have family history of this disease then do maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep a watch on symptoms of diabetes mentioned above. I also advise people with family history of diabetes to get their fasting sugar checked after every 3 months.

I urinate almost 15 times a day and dring water equally frequently. Does that mean that I have diabetes?

    • Lavanay says:

Urinating frequently can be a symptoms of several health problems like urinary track infection, Urinary incontinency, weak bladder, prostate enlargement, kidney disease etc. Some medicines may also result in frequent urination. So, frequent urination alone may not be taken as guaranteed symptoms of diabetes. But this condition definately asks for a testing. So, visit a lab and get your fasting blood sugar and PP sugar test done. If the result is out of range, do consult with a diabetician.
